Dr. Dobb's Journal magazine is pleased to announce that Anders Hejlsberg is the recipient of the 2001 Dr. Dobb's Excellence In Programming Award. Hejlsberg is a software engineer best known as author of Borland's Turbo Pascal, the ground-breaking development environment of the early 1980s, and chief architect of its successor, Delphi. Hejlsberg is currently a Distinguished Engineer in Microsoft's developer division, where he was the architect for Visual J++ and the Windows Foundation Classes, chief designer of the C# programming language, and a key participant in the development of the .NET Framework.

"It's easy to forget about the excitement Turbo Pascal created and the impact it had on programmers in the 1980s," said Dr. Dobb's Journal editor-in-chief Jonathan Erickson. "The first release actually fit on a single floppy diskette, and it did as much -- if not more -- than anything to establish the personal computer as a viable computing platform. And to think there are thousands and thousands of lines of Turbo Pascal source code still in use today."

Dr. Dobb's Excellence In Programming Award is granted annually to individuals who, in the spirit of innovation and cooperation, have made significant contributions to the advancement of software development. Previous recipients include Linus Torvalds, Larry Wall, James Gosling, Ron Rivest, Guido van Rossum, Jon Bentley, and others.
